Upcoming iPhone 6 and Galaxy S5 may not follow the latest trend in features

galaxyround64011:30 AM – Samsung and Apple are two of the leading industry companies in terms of the smartphone market.  Both hold quite a bit of market share and are always in competition with each other.  Ever since the release of the iPhone in 2007, it was thought that no one could step up to Apple and take them head on.  Samsung proved those critics wrong by going head-to-head with Apple.  Several versions of both the iPhone and Galaxy S smartphones have come and gone, so lets take a look into the future.

In recent news, both Samsung and LG introduced their own versions of smartphones with curved displays.  Samsung introduced the Galaxy Round and LG introduced the G Flex.  Currently, there are no other smartphones on the market with these features.  Now, according to Korean Herald, “unnamed industry” sources have told them that curved displays will not have curved displays.  The reason behind it is actually a lot simpler than you think.

Samsung currently is not able to mass produce the curved displays in sufficient numbers for its upcoming flagship device.  Currently, Samsung is only able to pour out 500,000 flexible displays for smartphones, with a 30 percent yield.  Production for flexible displays could go up to 1 million units in late 2014. If Samsung isn’t able to produce the volume for itself, it obviously won’t be able to produce anything for its competition.  Eugene Investment & Securities analyst Kim Jong-hyun says that “the current capacity for flexible panels is not high enough for the Galaxy S5, which will be rolled out early next year.”  He continues on and says that “curved ones will be unveiled late next year as a Galaxy variant rather than as a flagship model.”

Since both LG and Samsung are not able to mass produce, this means Apple will not be introducing curved display in its next iPhone.  Instead, the Cupertino giant is expected to introduce a curved glass corner-like design.  An unnamed source says that “Apple is a very difficult client. Suppliers must disclose every cost and detail and reap little profit.”  Source also says “Chinese companies may not stand it at least for now.”

What are your thoughts about curved displays coming to your favorite flagship smartphone?
