According to IDC, Essential shipped less than 90,000 phones in 2017

This past holiday season, Essential brought a really sweet deal on its Essential Phone by dropping the price to a cool $399 on Cyber Monday. Even though the phone was dropped to the low price of $399, it appears that the phone still didn’t sell very well.

According to a tweet from IDC research director Francisco Jeronimo, the phone apparently sold less than 90,000 units in the first six months after it launched.

Even if Essential were to move many more units, it still has a lot of catching up to do before it scratches the league of Apple or Samsung, for example. Both Apple and Samsung dominance the market right now, with Apple selling over 1 million iPhone 8s and Xs per day, according to Forbes.

It is worth mentioning that Essential is a start up and the Essential Phone is its first product. They aren’t expected to perform at the level of Apple right away when talking about unit shipments. But even though it’s a start up, the numbers that IDC provided are still considered pretty low, especially since the device was hyped around quite a bit.
