In February, it appears that Tesla had temporarily stopped production of the Model 3 in order to fix crucial problems in the assembled process. Bloomberg reports that the production line at the company’s Fremont plan was shutdown between February 20th and February 24th. In a statement, Tesla said that it plans of production include pauses to “improve automation and systemically address bottlenecks.”
Tesla can’t really afford to further delay Model 3. It’s the company’s first attempt at building a truly mass-market electric vehicle that has an affordable price tag. The Model 3 project has suffered numerous setbacks because Tesla struggles during mass production.
CEO Elon Musk has pledged that volumes of Model 3 will increase over time, and claimed that the company would make 5,000 models a week by March. This goal has apparently been pushed back to June because the company continues to struggle on production line. If these pauses in production help Tesla engineers fix some of the more chronic issues in the process, then by all means whatever it takes to speed things up.
