Nimbus Data overtakes Samsung’s record with 100TB SSD capacity

Just a month ago, Samsung released a record-setting 30TB SSD, but it didn’t last very long. Nimbus Data has come out with the ExaDrive DC100, which has a massive capacity of 100TB of 3D flash memory and is inside a standard 3.5-inch SATA form factor. To put it into perspective, that’s 20 million songs you could put on there.

The SSD is geared towards servers where capacity takes a priority over everything else, including performance. A data center can technically hold 100 petabytes of data in a single rack, so there won’t be a need for huge space in server rooms. This is definitely helpful for cloud servers, AI and other technologies where large amounts of data are needed.

As you might guess, the cost of the 100TB SSD may be quite high. When the DC100 ships this summer, it will have a pricing comparable to other business-grade SSDs “on a per terabyte basis.” This essentially means that it will be priced in the tens of thousands of dollars, so you won’t be able to just pick one up at Best Buy. The drive should provide a good stability and performance, but that’s a lot of cash to spend if anything were to go wrong.
