Tyler Barris, the notorious Call of Duty swatter, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a US district court judge today for placing fake 911 calls, according to the Associated Press. In a previous 2017 swatting incident, it resulted it the death of a man in Wichita, Kansas. The fatal shooting came from an argument over a $1.50 bet in the Call of Duty game between Barriss and another gamer.
In the argument between Barriss and the other game, Shane Gaskill, Barriss was given the address to which he proceeded to call the Wichita police posing as his rival. He told the dispatches that he had murdered his father and was hosting rest of the family hostage. Soon after, a SWAT team showed up to the address provided to Barriss by Gaskill, which turned out to be the residence of 28-year-old Andrew Finch.
The officer involved in the fatal shooting of Finch was not criminally charged, but Finch’s family has sued the city of Wichita over the incident.
The 26-year-old Barriss was arrested shortly after the fatal shooting occurred and plead guilty to 51 total charges late last year. He plead guilty mostly to numerous reports he made to emergency services. It was also discovered that he placed bomb threats to the Dallas Convention Center, a Florida high school and the Federal Communications Commission building during the period on which the agency voted to repeal net neutrality.
