Today, we just learned some new juicy details about the next-generation PlayStation. The company has been fairly quiet about details for the PlayStation 5, but today, we got some cold-hard facts, or rather specific details about the new gaming Console.
In an interview with Wired, system architect Mark Cerny confirmed details about the PlayStation 5. He said that it would be powered by a third-generation AMD Ryzen CPU with eight cores built on the company’s 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. In terms of the GPU, the CPU will come paired with a custom built GPU on AMD’s Radeon Navi family, and support ray-tracing, which is an advanced lighting technique that’s currently seen on high-end gaming PCs.
Cerny added that the PlayStation 5 will also support 8K graphics, will ship with an SSD to accelerate rendering and reduce load times. Wired noted that Cerny demonstrated by booting up Insomniac’s Spider-Man game and showing how fast-travel times could be reduced to 0.8 from 15 seconds.

The PS5 won’t be too different from the current-gen PS4 and will share similar architecture. Therefore, it will be backwards-compatible with PS4 games and will bring support for the current PlayStation VR headset. Cerny did not provide additional details regarding a headset or the console would potentially become available. He did mention that it will accept physical media like the current PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. This is an interesting move because Microsoft is reportedly working on a cheaper, disc-less version of the Xbox One S console.
These are all the details currently known. We don’t know what Sony will call its next console (for the sake of this article, we called it PS5), or when it will become available. As soon as we have more details, we will make them public.
