9:00 AM – It isn’t a very good idea to comment and ridicule about one of your biggest customers. Earlier, Qualcomm CMO Anand Chandrasekher made a statement about Apple’s new 64-bit processor in the iPhone 5s.
In an interview, CMO Chandrasekher said that Apple’s 64-bit processor is nothing more than a “marketing gimmick. There’s zero benefit a consumer gets from that.” He continued on to also state that the 64-bit processor is only necessary when running a device with greater than 4GB of RAM, whereas the iPhone 5s only contains 1GB of RAM. Apple has already made the tools necessary for developers to start building their apps for the 64-bit platform.
Fast forward to this week, Qualcomm has issued a statement, in a sense apologizing for Chandrasekher’s comments about Apple’s 64-bit processor. Here is what a Qualcomm spokesperson said:
The comments made by Anand Chandrasekher, Qualcomm CMO, about 64-bit computing were inaccurate. The mobile hardware and software ecosystem is already moving in the direction of 64-bit; and, the evolution to 64-bit brings desktop class capabilities and user experiences to mobile, as well as enabling mobile processors and software to run new classes of computing devices.
It’s no surprise that Qualcomm issued a statement, retracting what the CMO said earlier. Qualcomm itself is working on a 64-bit processor, as well as other companies such as Samsung. It’s true that mobile computing is moving to the 64-bit platform as there’s much more potential. Mobile gaming especially has become a very popular trend, with Apple’s iPhone leading the pack.
