9:50 AM – Not long ago, the Federal Aviation Administration removed electronic restrictions for passengers in-flight. Now according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, the FCC may allow passengers to make calls in-flight from their cell phones.
FCC is considering to allow phone calls in-flight, however, cell data will still remain off for the duration of the flight. After a plane reaches 10,000 feet, passengers would be free to make phone calls at anytime.
The FCC and FAA will have a meeting in December to discuss this matter. If this were to pass, no airline would be forced to implement this rule. The decision to allow calls in-flight will be entirely up to the Airline.
The biggest factor that may be part of the discussion is disturbance and annoyance during flight. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want someone sitting next to me talking constantly (and loudly) on their phone for the entire flight. That’s where the line draws. Perhaps both parties can come up with a solution to this problem.
The technology is there to support this, but other passengers and flight attendants may not like the idea so much.
