11:50 AM – Facebook is one of the most widely used social networking sites in the world. The company has tried to pair up with several companies such as HTC to bring a Facebook-dedicated phone to the market, however it has not seen much success. Facebook may or may not give that a try again, but one company has a solution for those of you who use Facebook a lot.
According to a report from AllThingsD, GoSmart will offer unlimited (free) access to Facebook and Facebook Messenger to all of its customers. GoSmart, a contract-free carrier is a T-Mobile prepaid brand and is the first wireless company in the United States to offer such deal. The deal begins in January. To start, all you have to do is log-in to Facebook through the app or your phone’s browser and start browsing Facebook. Now, if you want to go to some other website or browse around the internet other than Facebook, you will need to enroll in a data plan.
Currently it isn’t clear what network speeds the carrier will be offering to its customers. My best guess would be that customer will get T-Mobile’s 2G speeds in order for customers to not gobble up too much data. You get 2G speeds with GoSmart’s $35 base data plan anyways. Yes you will have to wait longer for pages to load, but why does it matter if it’s free, right?
Both sides benefit from this. Facebook will get a host of new users on its site, and GoSmart will benefit from new customers enrolling in their plans. In a press release, Chris Daniels who is the vice president of partnerships at Facebook says that “Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected, and we’re delighted that GoSmart subscribers, many who don’t have data access, will be able to use Facebook for free.”
No matter what plan you choose, Facebook access will always be free. Will you take advantage of this?
