9:30 AM – Recent years between Samsung and Apple have been not very good. Both companies have been launching lawsuits left and right based on patent’s each company owns. Apple has won a few cases and so has Samsung, however the most important thing being affected between the two companies is their relationship. Currently, Samsung is one of the most important and largest parts supplier for Apple.
Nobody wants war and as such, both companies are in talks again to end the patent war once and for all, according to unnamed officials at Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) telling The Korea Times. Both companies have already spent billions of dollars in patent war, with Apple recently receiving over $900 million in damages from Samsung.
One unnamed source to The Korea Times that “as far as I know, the companies recently resumed working-level discussions toward the signing of a potential deal. They are in the process of narrowing differences over royalty payments.” The source also added that the FTC is also discussing the matter with antitrust regulators in the U.S. and Europe.
The amount of money for the patents is the reason why the both companies have not come to an agreement. Both sides have differences between each other, and that’s one of the reasons as to why negotiations in the past have been useless. Additionally, according to the report, Samsung’s mobile boss JK Shin will most likely fly to the U.S. to meet with top Apple executives early next year with the intention of coming up with a possible licensing deal. It’s good to see both companies are trying hard to end the patent war, but there is need for some compromise on each side, which neither side is willing to do.
