The recent hype over Model 3 has been so much. Now we turn our attention to Model Y, which according to recent tidbits state that it may be here sooner than we thought. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is known to have big ambitious plans. We know that he’s been teasing the Model Y for quite some time now. So far, what we know is that it will be a crossover vehicle, and that Model Y would be based on an entirely new platform that will take it away from the 12-volt battery architecture used in current Tesla vehicles.
So what are the tidbits? Musk revealed that the Model Y’s new platform will reduce the complexity associated with the electrical wiring during production of their cars. How does this help Telsa exactly? Well, it will help the company to further streamline the manufacturing process. This will allow Tesla to bring out cars faster to their customers.
Model Y is also based on Tesla’s Model 3 platform, much like we’ve seen Model X based off of the Model S platform. Musk in earnings call yesterday stated that his team convinced him to abandon plans for an entirely new platform so the company can produce cars faster for its customers.
Musk states, “upon the council of my executive team to reel me back from the cliffs of insanity, the Model Y will, in fact, be using substantial carry over from Model 3 in order to bring it to market faster.” He further adds that “I have to thank my executive team for stopping me from being a fool,”
What we know of Musk, he won’t entirely abandon the plans for a new platform. Could be that he’s temporarily putting in on-hold. “I still think we want to do the crazy thing in the future,” Musk further explained. “But we will want to punt that until after the compact SUV.”
