Netflix previously has never acquired a company before, but that’s all changing now. Netflix today announced that it’s acquiring comic book publisher Millarworld, marking the first ever acquisition by the video streaming giant. Millarworld is Mark Millar’s comic book publishing company.
In Netflix’s press release, the company is acquiring Millarworld as part of their strategy to “acquire intellectual property and ownership of stories featuring compelling characters.” Reason for this is to help their own Netflix Original shows and movies, which are becoming increasingly popular and critical part of their strategy.
Millarworld is best known for its three franchises that are already on screen: Wanted, Kick-Ass, and Kingsman. Under the new Netflix acquisition, the creative team at Millarworld will continue to exist, create, and publish new stories.
Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos also commented that the company will be adapting both existing Millarworld franchises, and will also acquire new stories developed by Mark Millar and Millarworld’s creative team moving forward.
Terms of the acquisition were not announced by either company. But knowing Netflix and how serious they are for original programming, the company isn’t afraid to spend a pretty penny to get increase its own library of licenses.
