An interesting look into iPhone 8 and how Apple isn’t always first to introduce new tech

With the upcoming iPhone 8, there is a lot of excitement about several new features. For example, the upcoming iPhone 8 will be re-introducing a glass back that has been previously featured in iPhone 4 and 4S.

In an article by Bloomberg, they roundup an interesting list of new expected featured, who got to them first, and when they were introduced for consumer use. Bloomberg makes an interesting note that Apple rarely tries to be the first one on the market to introduce new technology. The company is notorious to try and perfect technology or let technology catch up to their expectations before introducing it to their consumers.

The new iPhone won’t be a case-study of innovation, more a matter of perfecting features that are already out there in rival devices. Time and again, Apple has followed this “best, not first” philosophy, seizing on technologies and features bungled by rivals and implementing them well enough to spur widespread adoption.

Bloomberg also provides a full timeline of modern smartphone features, who introduced them, and when.

Apple is expected introduce a near-bezel-free OLED display, and face-recognition technology that may replace Touch ID. In addition, the company is expected to finally introduce wireless charging in the iPhone 8.
