First spotted by SamMobile, users on Reddit were reporting that a new software update added HDR YouTube support. The Jolt Journal was also able to confirm that the update is live for the YouTube app and offers HDR playback up to 1080p and 60 fps.
The new YouTube app update has added support for Samsung’s Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, and Note 8. These are the first phones to receive HDR support from YouTube. It also seems that the update was quietly rolled out, but was noticed by users on Reddit and picked up by SamMobile.
Back in November 2016, that’s when YouTube added support for HDR video playback, but didn’t really rollout to any smartphones that offer HDR experience. For now, HDR support is only available on the listed Samsung smartphones. Google may choose to rollout the experience to other compatible phones such as LG G6 or may choose to just rollout on devices released in the future. We will keep you updated.
