GameStop shelves plan for unlimited game rental subscription service

The Jolt Journal (https://www.joltjournal.com)

Last month, we reported that GameStop announced a new rental subscription service that would allow customers to rent as many used games as they wanted for a six-month period for a flat fee. It was an interesting concept that the company introduced that would revitalize the used-game industry for them.

According to a new report from Kotaku, it appears that GameStop has decided to “temporarily pause” the roll out of the new service. It’s interesting to see that GameStop decided to pause the service because they didn’t provide an explanation as to why they halted the program. Instead, the company said that “program limitations” is what caused the sudden stop in the service.

It appears that GameStop’s point-of-sale system isn’t able to properly handle the new rental program, according to GameStop sources. The company is most likely developing an upgrade for its current system or shopping around for a new system to use for their operations.

GameStop’s PowerPass program is set at a $60 price point where customers can check out a used game, plat it as much as they want, and then return it. Upon the return, customers can choose another title to check out. All of this can be done in the six-month period that the fee has been paid for. At the end of the the six-months, customers will be allowed to keep one game they rented over the six-month period. The company right now is offering a full refund, plus an additional used game to make up for the sudden interruption. GameStop hasn’t announced when it plans to bring back the PowerPass program.
