According to a new report from MacRumors, a tipster told them that AT&T will soon start offering iPhone 3GS models to its pre-paid GoPhone customers. The iPhone 3GS models however, will not be new and will come refurbished.
What remains to be know is what the price will be. Currently, AT&T offers the iPhone 4 at the price of $325, so for sure the iPhone 3GS will be below that price tag. The company may look to offer the 2009-model iPhone at $200 price point, but that remains to be seen at an official announcement. The main reason why AT&T is looking to introduce the 3GS to the pre-paid market is due to extremely price-conscious customers.
Here is what the tipster said to MacRumors:
The tipster claims the phone will not be displayed or promoted publicly, but sales reps will be able to offer them to certain price-sensitive customers. Not all AT&T stores will have them but it is claimed that AT&T’s larger and more metropolitan locations should have decent amounts of stock.
The iPhone 3GS was discontinued last year when the iPhone 5 announcement took place. Potential customers are advised to know that since Apple has discontinued the support for iPhone 3GS, it does not come with the latest software. It only supports up to iOS 6, so latest security patches and updates will not be issued to the iPhone 3GS.
Currently, we do now know which models of the iPhone 3GS will be offered, as there are several different versions. Internal storage is one concern as the latest 3GS offer 8GB, but older models offer 16GB and 32GB space. Another is the color as the iPhone 3GS is offered in both black and white. As soon as we find out, we will inform you.
