Microsoft has provided its second Windows 10 statistics update this year, and has announced that 600 million devices are now running Windows 10. The 600 million number comes from various devices such as PCs, tablets, HoloLens headsets, Xbox One consoles, and even Surface Hub devices. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed these latest numbers during the company’s annual shareholders meeting today, as reported by GeekWire.
The company originally wanted to touch the 1 billion device mark by 2018, but eventually gave up that ambitious goal last year. Microsoft admitted that it needed more time to hit the 1 billion target. How long it will take Microsoft to get to that point remains unclear, especially since growth of Windows 10 reduced a lot due to the company withdrawing its Windows 10 upgrade offer. It also doesn’t help the fact that Microsoft also gave up on its Windows Phone as well.
There is very little hope at this point that the Windows Phone would have helped Microsoft bridge the gap to get to that 1 billion mark. Instead, Microsoft is now breaking their goals down in months by perhaps setting quarterly goals on where they would like to see Windows 10 to be. Another option that could help Microsoft accelerate the goal to 1 billion would be to open offers again for free Windows 10 upgrades for those that weren’t able to take advantage of the offer first time around.
