Your communication on Instagram may not be limited to just messaging for too long. Our friends over at TechCrunch discovered some hidden codes and icons for “Call” and “Video Call” in the platform’s and its standalone Direct messaging app’s Android APKs.
When reached out to Instagram about the findings, they refused to comment about TechCrunch‘s finding, but APKs will typically contain features developers plan to release at a later date. Instead of just messaging, having the ability to make voice and video calls from within direct messaging would make Instagram that much engaging, as well as a bigger threat to Snapchat. Snap is already struggling because Instagram Stories are already a big success among users.
By introducing audio and video call features inside Instagram, it would change the dynamics of how you the app plays a role in your daily life. Right now, it serves as a platform where you can take a peek at what your friends are doing, their highlight reels, but at the same time, you rely on apps like Messenger to connect with them on a more personal level. If these features were to arrive on Instagram, you won’t need to hop from app to app to use different features. All you’ll have to do is place an audio or video call from your DM on Instagram. Pretty convenient, don’t you think?
