Uber in talks with Toyota to offer self-driving technology

It doesn’t look like Lyft and Waymo will be the only ridesharing companies to offer their self-driving technology to others. Nikkei claims that Uber is currently in talks to bring its autonomous vehicle system into a Toyota minivan. This would mark it as Uber’s first attempts to sell to others on the market.

The Japanese paper says that Uber chief Dara Khosrowshahi recently met with Toyota execs at the company’s research center in Pittsburgh. At this time, it’s unclear how far along the progression is for the talks or what is being discussed at this time.

In a statement to Reuters, Toyota said that its staffers “regularly exchange” self-driving information with Uber, but further added that there hasn’t been a definite decision made aside from current involvement. This really isn’t a confirmation, but it isn’t a denial either. The two companies could potentially be doing some trial work before committing to something more long term.
