Last year, Roku had launched a free, ad-supported film channel that is available to all those with a Roku player, stick of TV in the US. For all you Samsung smart TV owners out there, you’re about to get a small gift from Roku.
The company has announced that The Roku Channel will be available as an app on select Samsung smart TVs this summer. The channel’s selection include content from studios like Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate and MGM. In addition, there are films from Roku channel publishers such as American Classics and Popcornflix. The selections are updated every month.
Roku said that The Roku Channel is top 20 channel on the Roku platform. Even though it’s ad-supported, it has around half of the advertising per programming hour that you see on traditional TV channels.
At this time, there’s no exact time when the app will become available on Samsung TVs or which TV models will have access to it. The Roku Channel will more than likely hit other third-party devices in the future, but Roku hasn’t provided any details on which. “We are looking at a variety of distribution opportunities but don’t have anything specific to share today,” a spokesperson told Variety.
