Tesla may be trying to keep up with Model 3 demand and speeding up production, it now has to also deal with issues affecting other models. Yesterday, the company announced a recall that affects every Model S built before April 2016 (via Bloomberg and Reuters).
In all, this adds up to about 123,000 vehicles worldwide that the company plans to fit with new power strewing bolts because it has “observed excessive corrosion in the power steering bolts, though only in very cold climates, particularly those that frequently use calcium or magnesium road salts, rather than sodium chloride (table salt).”
Tesla says that it’s initiating this recall even though, according to its estimate, has affected fewer than 0.2 percent of vehicles that exhibit this issue. In an emails that the company sent to owners, it explains that if the bolts fail, the steering wheel would still work, but with the loss or reduced power assist.
