Yesterday, we learned that both Sears and Delta had personal and financial information exposed for thousands of their customers. This is due to the companies entrusting their data to the tech firm [24]7.ai, which itself had suffered a several-week breach last fall, but only informed its clients last month.
Now, it appears that another well-known corporation may have had their customers’ data compromised: Best Buy. Though it appears that only a “small fraction” of overall online Best Buy shopper may have had their information compromised.
In a statement, Best Buy confirmed that [24]7.ai provided a chat service that customers used from their computer or phone. The breach apparently happened between September 27th and October 12th of last year. To make matters worse, customer payment information may have also been compromised, and those who used Best Buy’s chat service could have had their data exposed. Best Buy did not provide any additional information on the matter. Though it’s safe to say that affected customers will not be charged for fraudulent purchases and they will also provide free credit monitoring service.
