VW is serious about bringing self-parking cars it seems. The automaker has promised that vehicles in the company group (includes brands like Audi, Bentley, Porsche and Lamborghini) will come packed with autonomous parking, starting in 2020. At first, the system will only be available in “selected” parking garages, but relies on pictorial guiding markers that will be used in any garage.
In terms of being introduced, the system will arrive in two phrases. The first is where cars with autonomous parking will be guided to a separate area so that they don’t have to deal with unpredictability of human drivers. After that, VW promises to enable “mixed” parking where autonomous and piloted cars will share the same areas. Talking about outdoor parking lots, yes, the company will bring support to that.
At this time, we don’t know which cars will first get this site, but any model with driverless parking will have an “active surrounding recognition system” which includes cameras, radar and ultrasound. By the sound of it, it’s likely that it will come first in luxury brands due to cost, and a factor of “if” it will come to more affordable brands.
