For months now, we have been hearing about Samsung coming up with their own smart watch. As soon as the rumor got out that Apple is looking to get into the smart watch business, Samsung didn’t waste anytime. They put their heads together to come up with a smart watch of their own, the Galaxy Gear.
Today at the IFA 2013, Samsung unveiled their long rumored smart watch. Over the course of last few months, we had been seeing bits and pieces of the the smart watch, images and specs being leaked, but now Samsung officially unveils the smart watch. I must say though, the watch does look nice.
The Galaxy Gear, hardware wise has 1.63-inch AMOLED touchscreen display and a 1.9-megapixel camera built into the strap of the watch. It also includes an 800MHz processor, 4GB of storage, and 512MB of RAM. The watch also has two mics and one speaker. The Gear features both an accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. Worried about battery life? The smart watch includes a 315 mAh battery, which is only good up to 24 hours of regular use, which is quite disappointing.
In terms of the software side, there’s quite a bit packed into it. Through Bluetooth, the Gear has the ability to make and receive phone calls, create video memos and receive push notifications for texts, as well as other alerts. You will be happy to know that the Gear is compatible with any Samsung device, excluding the Galaxy Note 3 and the Note 10.1. Samsung has also stated that the watch will show support for apps such as Evernote, and Path. There are a total of 70 apps compatible at launch currently.
