Today, automaker Volvo announced that it’s next-generation Sensus infotainment system (that runs on Android) will come with Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play Store embedded. By bringing Google Maps to its infotainment system, the company is giving drivers access to reliable mapping capabilities. By also bringing Google Assistant, the automaker is giving drivers voice control over in-car functions like air conditioning, messaging and music.
“Bringing Google services into Volvo cars will accelerate innovation in connectivity and boost our development in applications and connected services,” Henrik Green, Volvo senior VP of research and development, said in a statement. “Soon, Volvo drivers will have direct access to thousands of in-car apps that make daily life easier and the connected in-car experience more enjoyable.”
Last year, we learned that Google and Volvo were reaping up to bring Android to future cars. By bringing these features to the Sensus infotainment system, it allows drivers to independently use the system without having to rely on their smartphones since it will be based on Android. Volvo added that the first Android-based system will launch in a few years.
