While Sony officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro in September 2024, we now have several additional key details of the upcoming gaming console. Sony will release the PlayStation 5 Pro console on November 7, 2024.
When is the PS5 Pro Release Date?
Sony will release the PlayStation 5 Pro on November 7, 2024.
What is the price of the PlayStation 5 Pro?
The PlayStation 5 Pro will cost $699.99 in the United States.
What are the PlayStation 5 Pro Specs and Features?
The PS5 Pro comes with several new features. One of the first, most notable, changes is that it doesn’t come with a disc drive. Previously, every PS5 has come with a disc drive or disc-free option, but the PS5 Pro only comes disc-free. If you need to use a disc drive, it will cost you an additional $79.99.
Sony has outlined the three major areas of improvement:
- Larger GPU
- Advanced ray tracing
- AI-driven upscaling
The PS5 Pro’s GPU is packing quite hot punch, with 28% speedier RAM and 67% more compute units. Sony has expressed that it will boost rendering speed by up to 45% over previous models.
If you’re worried about not having enough hard drive space, don’t worry. The PlayStation 5 Pro will come with a 2TB hard drive, double the size of what the PS5 Slim includes.
What is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)?
Sony has introduced another feature called “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution,” which will be powered by machine-learning hardware. PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny has stated that the “PSSR analyzes the game images pixel by pixel and can add an extraordinary amount of detail, which boosts the effective resolution of the games.” Taking this into account, you can expect some good boost to your resolution on some of your favorite games, especially if you play on high-resolution devices like 4K TVs.
What’s interesting is previously, gamers typically had to choose between a “Fidelity” mode that powers high-level graphics and ray tracing at the cost of frame rate (~ 30 fps) or a “Performance” option which brings the it up to 60fps, but looks significantly worse overall. PSSR will help bridge the gap between the two.
The larger PS5 Pro GPU, combined with more efficient ray tracing, and PSSR will make the games looks smoother and faster for a better overall gaming experience. It’s important to mention that not every game may use these features because it ultimately depends on the developer, but you can expect games like The Last of Us to support these improvements.
Anything Else I Should Know?
The PlayStation 5 Pro launched on November 7, 2024, and will be available for $699.99. The console does have a steep price, well over what the existing PS5’s are going for, so if it fits within your budget and you’re a gamer that really wants it, I’d say go for it and enjoy your heart out.
