London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a center-left politician, isn’t the biggest fan of Uber because of the way the company has been operating in London. Despite criticizing Uber’s conduct, Khan is giving credit where it’s due. He welcomed the humility shown by Uber’s new chief executive officer Dara Khosrowshahi.
Last month, Transport for London (TfL) stripped Uber of its transportation license when it saw the company unfit to run a taxi service in the city. It refused to renew Uber’s license, citing the firm’s approach to reporting serious criminal offenses and background checks on drivers.
After having its license stripped, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi made arrangements to take action. He met with TfL Commissioner Mike Brown on Tuesday to discuss options as to how things can be handled by both sides. The discussion were described as “constructive.” Khan, who is also the chairman of TfL, said he did not meet with Khosrowshahi.
“What gives me confidence about the TfL decision is the fact that the global chief executive officer for Uber apologized to London,” Khan told LBC Radio. “I think that bodes well in relation to the humility which hasn’t been shown by Uber London or Uber UK,” he said.
Uber’s final fate will be decided by a judge who will rule on the appeal after it’s submitted by October 13. Khosrowshahi has only been the CEO of Uber just over a month already has a lot on his plate and continuing to clean up the mess created by former-CEO Travis Kalanick.
