OnePlus 5T apparently isn’t able to stream high-definition content from Netflix, Google Play Movies, Amazon Prime, and other video services, despite the fact that that the 5T has a HD-capable display and powerful hardware.
This was first noted in a thread on OnePlus forums. The thread points to the phone’s lack of support for Widevine Level 1 DRM, which is what many services require for HD streaming. Right now, the OnePlus 5T supports Widevine Level 3, which is only able to cover standard definition streaming. We’ve confirmed that both the OnePlus 5T and its predecessor, OnePlus 5, are both unable to stream in high-definition.
OnePlus spokesperson has said that a future update for the 5T will bring Widevine Level 1 support for the device, but didn’t say why it was omitted in the first place. There is no time frame for the update as to when it will be pushed to the 5T.
OnePlus 5T is a feature-packed device that has a 6-inch, 1080p display, Snapdragon 835 processor, and at least 6GB RAM. THese specs tell us that the device has plenty of powerful hardware to support high-definition video streaming. Streaming from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video seem quite pixelated, even when both apps were set to highest possible streaming quality. Hopefully OnePlus will soon issue the update for 5T owners.
