Reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently issued a new investor note claiming that Apple’s 2018 iPhone offerings will feature two new iPhone versions of the iPhone X. One model is expected to feature a 6.5-inch OLED display while the other will boast a 6.1-inch LCD display. Of course, both devices will feature edge-to-edge displays and will take advantage of Face ID as opposed to Touch ID.
Here’s where things get interesting. Kuo adds that Apple may opt to discontinue the current iPhone X in its entirety if sales continue to be underwhelming. The excitement around the iPhone X has appeared to be slowing dying out over the months after launch last year.
“KGI also expects a trio of iPhone models in the fall of 2018,” AppleInsider notes. “He predicts the iPhone X will be ‘end of life’ in the summer of 2018, instead of being retained as a lower-cost option in the following year.”
If this prove to be true, this will definitely be an interesting shift in Apple’s iPhone sales strategy. Normally, Apple makes the older iPhone models cheaper once new models come out, but it appears that Apple may not do this. Instead, the company could just offer the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus as options while taking the iPhone X out of the question.
The 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will essentially be the current-gen iPhone X and become more affordable than the current X phone. Since LCD are more affordable than OLED, it makes sense for Apple to offer a newer option that’s not only more affordable to the consumer but cheaper for Apple to produce.
