Previously known as the Ataribox, it’s been more of a tease than anything. It was first unveiled last summer, but has run into numerous delays and the lack of game announcements hasn’t helped the enthusiasm either. That trend, unfortunately, is continuing today.
Atari announced that it’s rebranding the Ataribox as the Atari VCS, and plans to show prototypes of the system, the Classic Joystick and the Modern Controller at the Game Developers Conference this week. That’s all it’s showing, unfortunately.
The company hasn’t mentioned a game lineup, and noted that the “objective” is to announce the pre-order date sometime this April. With numerous delays previously, it could be well into the sprint before you get to pre-order the VCS, since it won’t just be laying the vintage games and will be offering more. The company leaves a lot unanswered, so hopefully they do answer more questions in the near future.
