All of the Tesla Model 3 cars that the company is currently making is a single motor, rear-wheel drive variant. If you’re more interested int he dual motor all-wheel drive mode, you may not have to wait much longer, but the news isn’t very good either.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk informed a pre-order customer that AWD Model 3 production will “probably” start in July. Basically, he wants manufacturing levels to be at a level where the company can afford to introduce features that “inhabit production ramp,” and there’s still a ways to go for Tesla.
In terms of Tesla’s production volume, the company is making just over 2,000 Model 3 units a week right now. This is an improvement over what it was previously, but Musk’s goal for product is to be at 5,000 cars per week before he’s comfortable with introducing an AWD version of Model 3.
Words from Musk should give AWD fans of when that version could potentially arrive. Right now, Tesla more than likely has its hands full with current Model 3 configuration, and is hesitant to introduce more variants until it’s comfortable.
