Woman from Pennsylvania gets a $284 billion electric bill from their electric company

It’s the season for giving, right? Well, Mary Horomanski of Erie, Pennsylvania woke up to a big gift from her electric company in the form of a huge bill. When I say huge, I really do mean that this bill is ridiculous.

Horomanski logged into her online utility account to see the balance of her electric bill only to discover that her balance was $284,460,000,000. Yes, those zero’s are correct and not a mistake. This is also more than enough to put dozens of Horomanski family generation is huge debt. Tis’ the season of giving, right?

“My eyes just about popped out of my head,” Horomanski told local news outlet GoErie. “We had put up Christmas lights and I wondered if we had put them up wrong.”

The utility company wanted a mere $28,156 upfront, and the rest of the balance to be paid off with the next 12 months. Of course paying off $284 billion isn’t going to be possible in just a mere 12 months, even if they were to hit the lotto. Horomanski grabbed her phone and called her electric company to get to the bottom of it.

After her son spoke with the electric company, she learned that the entire balance was actually just a bizarre error. Somehow, a decimal place in the customer’s normal bill total and we from $284.46 into the billions. Thankfully though, the company fixed this issue immediately. A company spokesperson said they couldn’t explain how this happened but noted that this had never happened before.
