Chelsea Manning, a former US Army private who was previously convicted of leaking documents to Wikileaks, has officially filed paperwork to run for the US Senate in 2018.
From the filing, we learned that Manning will be running as a Democrat in Maryland. A report from The Washington Post said that Manning did not respond to a request for comment, but did say that she will be challenging state’s senior senator, Democrat Ben Cardin, who is up for a reelection this year.
Aside from Manning, Richard Vaughn, Jerry Segal, and Debbie Wilson have also announced their intention to run for the seat in senate. Maryland will hold its Democratic primary election on June 26th.
Today, Manning released a campaign ad to run for the US Senate, and positioned herself as a leader who will challenge the political status quo. Take a look at the campaign ad below.
