Pornhub owner Mindgeek has revealed a new tool that might become the new gatekeeping tool for porn in the UK. Meet AgeID, the tool that will ask porn site visitors to create an encrypted login that will allow them to verify their age across any and all compatible sites. This will save them from having to prove they’re 18 or older every time they want to view pornographic material online.
The system, AgeID, will draw on third-party age certification companies, but Mindgeek promises that AgeID won’t store any personal information. TO add, it will only keep “standard technical data” to prevent fraud as well as the protected login.
Speaking in terms of the technology, it will be available to every porn website available in the UK. The system will be free for independent UK porn studios, producers and bloggers, and will cost a flat fee for others, depending on their volume of British traffic. When the Digital Economy Act, the law mandating age goes full on effect in the UK, the system will go live. AgeID has already being used in Germany since 2015, but questions remain on how much control Mindgeek and its brands would have.
