Report: AT&T is making an unnecessary smartphone accessory called Mobile TV Cast

According to a new report from Android Authority, Moto is planning to release a new interesting Moto Mod for its modular smartphone, called AT&T Mobile TV Case. Have I got your attention? Good, so lets dive in. The mod is formed in two parts: a modular case that snaps onto the back of your phone, and the second is an HDMI dongle that gets attached to your TV.

With those two things in place, you can stream AT&T’s DirecTV Now service from your phone to your TV. Sounds good, right? Well, it’s unnecessary, to say the least. Streaming stuff from your phone to your TV is useful, but not when every recent Android phone out there has something called Miracast, which supports streaming in 4K HDR. Miracast is also built into most of the new smart TVs, doesn’t require any dongle in place, you can get a cheap dongle off of Amazon.

Android Authority says that “Setup is said to be very straightforward, with no pairing process required. It’s pretty much plug-and-play, and casting doesn’t require a Wi-Fi network.” While it doesn’t require a Wi-Fi network, it does require a Moto Mod for your phone, and presumably will cost a lot of money. For what it’s worth, the Mobile TV Cast mod will come with an extra battery inside.
