Federal prosecutors late Thursday submitted a formal notice that they plan to seek civil forfeiture of many different assets from Martin Shkreli. Prosecutors are going after the rare Wu-Tang Clan album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. This was the only one to every be produced.
Prosecutors told the judge in their 10-page filing that in the case against Shkreli, they will also seek to seize $5 million of his money, his shares in Turing Pharmaceuticals, Picasso painting, Lil Wayne album, and an Enigma machine. Quite the list, to say the least. Prosecutors are going after some of the big assets that Shkreli holds, even if they’re items.
In September 2017, Shkreli, nicknamed “Pharma Bro,” was ordered to jail because federal judge in Brooklyn agreed with prosecutors’ assessment that his online activities justified him being thrown in jail. Shkreli was previously on bail and was awaiting his sentence for his August 2017 conviction on securities fraud charges.
If you don’t know who Martin Shkreli is, here’s an overview. He’s most known for dramatically raising the price of an anti-parasitic drug by more than 5,000 percent. This brought a lot of attention to him, and was later arrested for security fraud and was charged in December of 2015.
Shkreli is scheduled for sentencing on January 16 2018.
