1:25 PM – Budget carrier Republic Wireless has been making several changes recently. The carrier uses Sprint’s network (both 3G/4G), and are known for their rock-bottom prices. The company has only offered mid-tier Android phones, until now.
The carrier is now offering the popular Moto X smartphone. Customers can take advantage of a high-tier smartphone on their network, with very aggressively priced plans. The Moto X is being offered for $299 (plus tax and other fees). This is very low priced compared to Motorola offering the unlocked version of the phone for $600. As you would expect, the Moto X comes with Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), a 4.7-inch 720p HD display, and includes the Active Display feature that lets you check the time or see icons indicating that a text or e-mail has arrived by peeking at the screen, even if the phone is asleep.
The only downfall is that you cannot design your own Moto X. This feature is currently only available on select nationwide carriers. If you would like to customize your Moto X, you will have to sign up service with the select nationwide carrier, or get an unlocked version directly from Motorola.
Additionally, the company has also added the following four plans:
- For $5 a month, you get unlimited voice, text and data, but only over Wi-Fi. To venture into cellular-only territory, you must upgrade to a different plan. This plan is perfect for parents wanting to give cell phones to their children on an occasional basis.
- For $10 a month, you can add cellular to the mix, but only for unlimited talk and texting; You will need to use Wi-Fi for unlimited data.
- For $25 a month, you can add unlimited 3G cellular.
- For $40 a month you get unlimited 4G cellular, including LTE where available (from Sprint, of course).
You also get an extra 50GB of storage on top of the standard 15GB free for two years to safely keep and share photos, documents & other files.
