Popular short-form video app TikTok received a victory today in India. An Indian state court has lifted the nationwide ban on the app. TikTok faced a nearly week-long ban in India that has now been reversed, according to lawyers involved in the case that spoke with Reuters.
Due to the previous decision, both Apple and Google removed the app from their respective stores in India after a high court in Tamil Nadu called for the app to be removed. The court previously stated that the app was exposing children to sexual predators and pornography.
TikTok facing the ban was a major setback. India is the app’s largest user base with nearly 300 million users. ByteDance, a Chinese company that owns TikTok, estimated in court filing that because of the ban, the company was losing nearly $500,000 a day.
In a statement, a TikTok spokesperson praised the court’s decision: “We are glad about this decision and we believe it is also greatly welcomed by our thriving community in India, who use TikTok as a platform to showcase their creativity. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our users better.”
